We had a good time last night, despite the fact that all the snow we got kept some of our guests stuck at home. We decorated gingerbread (graham cracker) houses, exchanged cookies, listened to Christmas music, and had a fun evening. Thanks to everyone who came, and most especially wore a crazy Christmas sweater!

We made Christmas Mixed cds for everyone to take home as party favors. You can see the list of songs here–including some favorites like What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (when he already owns a comb)

Tonight is our Crazy Christmas sweater party, which also means Miss Katie and I exchange gifts. Since she is over at her sister’s house now I figured it was safe for me to post a little preview of her presents. I saved that great potato bag because the red and green is just such festive fun. There are presents inside (which I won’t reveal yet just in case), The small candy box we saw the day we were shopping together so I bought it in secret for her, the suitcase is from bake it pretty (with goodies inside), and the hot pads I made myself.

The hot pads are really easy to make and smell oh so good. I filled mine with rice mixed with cloves, cinnamon sticks, and rosemary from my own plant which is still growing strong outside.
1. I sewed a square of fabric (sewing up 3 sides) turning it right side out.
2. I then sewed around the 3 edges that had already been sewn, but this time on the “right side” of the fabric. This makes it look more uniform later when you sew the pad closed.
3. I sewed 5 lines of stitching down the pad. These stiches create the channels you will fill with your rice mixture. Its important to make your stitches so they are running from one closed end of the pad, down to the open end. End your stitches about 1/2 inch shorter then the edge of your fabric. This will leave you a edge that is easier to turn under.
4. Next with pins handy and a funnel fill each channel with rice mixture. As you fill a section, tuck the open edges under and pin in place. This helps keep rice from spilling out.
5. Once all sides are filled and tucked, you can sew the opening shut on your sewing machine. Just go slow and remove the pins as you go. I found it helped to pin as close to the edge of the channel stitches as possible. This way I could leave the pins in and sew past them. This keeps rice from spilling out as your sewing. You also want to avoid sewing over any of the rice as it can break your needle. You can always handsewn the whole thing shut with a running stitch instead if it gives you trouble.
6. The pads are used to protect your tables and counters from hot dishes, and when the hot dishes are set down on them, they smell wonderful!

Lastly there is a glimpse of my sweater for the party. I went with embellishing my own this afternoon. last minute of course, so its not WOAH super crazy….but I’ve got some good prizes for those crazy sweaters coming :)

It has been snowing since we went to bed last night, and is still snowing strong. They say there is a winter storm warning in effect until 7am tomorrow morning, that is a lot of snow! Tom didn’t have to go in, so we’ve been having a lovely snow day in. Of course there has been loads of shoveling, we went through all of our book shelves (a long overdue task) and now we have over 20 reusable grocery bags filled with books that we are going to donate.

I hope everyone who has the snow is staying safe and tucked into home! Not sure yet what all this snow is going to mean for our party tomorrow…we shall see!

Oh and I made that pom-pom wreath above a few weeks ago after seeing some very lovely ones online. My hint ofr making pom-poms which everyone might already know..but just incase, is this: Triple up the yarn your going to wrap. So instead of cutting a length of yarn and wrapping it (to make the pom pom) Cut 3, 4, or even 6 lengths of yarn and wrap them all at once. It really speeds up the time it takes to make each pom pom, and doesn’t effect the finished pom poms at all. I used some yarn we had leftover from another crafty project to make mine.

Sorry for the crummy photos, I think I need to shop for a camera that does a bit better in low light ;)

My oldest son has a friend over to spend the night, so the little one and I set to work making candy candy candy. Every year I create a mix of baked goods for all of Tom’s co-workers. This year we decided to make candy mice but with fresh cherries (for our vegan friends we dipped the cherries into vegan-safe chocolate and coated those with chopped almonds), sponge candy (whoa serious fun), homemade malt balls (but I wouldn’t use that recipe again, it was okay but not amazing), and peanut butter fudge. For the fudge I used soy milk and earth balance butter-it turned out great.

Now everything is packed away in tins for Tom to take to work tomorrow! The little guy is in bed but I am back to work up in the studio (and listen to the new Splendid Table) working on some last minute gifts. I’ll be sure and share photos of those after Christmas :)

Oh and the candy eyes we used on the mice can be purchased here…

I am in charge of the goodie bags for my 6 year old’s holiday party. I was racking my brain for filler because I didn’t want to just buy some junky little toys that would probably never be played with (those tiny pinball things, plastic tops that do not spin ;) Last year I had included things like playdoh (you could make up a big batch and then send it in ziploc bags, or gumball machine plastic bubbles…homemade goop would be good too) But I wanted to do something different this year since his class has some of the same students.

The first thing I decided to make was these little gnomes. A bag of 5 blank wooden figures was $1.47 and I had everything else at home that I needed. I cut the clothing from felt and just made a quick stitch through each one on my sewing machine, then pulled the stitches to gather the neckline. Then I used my glue gun to attach the clothing to the gnome. The hats were just triangles cut out and glued onto the heads with my trusty glue gun. And all the faces were just drawn on with marker.

Next we made up little hot chocolate kits. My youngest son helped with these and really liked making them. We bought the plastic triangle tubes which are made for frosting. I think would put each tube into a tall glass we have and pull down the top of the plastic bag onto the rim of the glass. This made for easy filling. I then used a measuring cup to put in one serving of cocoa. B then would use a 1/4 measuring cup to add chips (we had chocolate, white chocolate, and mint) and then 1/4 cup of marshmallows. We did it assemble line style and were able to make 35 hot chocolate kits in less then an hour! You could easily change things up to make a vegan style kit too. Using a powdered chocolate and sugar mixture, then vegan chips or crushed candy cane on top. Include a little card with each kit explaining how to make the cocoa (like how much hot water or milk is needed) One of each of these is going into the goodie bags, and then a bunch went into stockings that we make each year for my older son’s friends.

Next up we made bell necklaces. I bought a big bag of over sized silver bells and just strung them onto ribbon we had. Easy, very inexpensive and again maybe something that would last a little longer.

I also want to make little kits so each kid can create their own Crystal Snowflake. We have a big thing of borax from other projects, so I would only need to print instructions, and add the pipe cleaners. We have plans to make some of these ourselves very soon! Then I’ll round out the goodie bags with a little bit of candy, some snowflake foam stickers, and a candy cane reindeer.

Oh and our very first ornament from the Crafty Crow’s Kid Ornament Swap arrived yesterday. it was very exciting!!

The kids and I are baking cookies cookies and more cookies. We have been a regular Santa’s workshop in the Kenney house. I thought I would pop in quick with a few more photos from around the house. The gumdrop balls were a gift last Christmas from Amanda.

I’ll be back tomorrow with photos and ideas for some of the handmade gifts we have made. Things like gifts for the kids friends, etc.

Here is a little gift guide for fun…I bought some of these very goods for people on my shopping list :) All photos come from the websites I am linking.

Sarah (the small object) has teamed with Chronicle Books to put out some pretty fantastic sets. This thumbprint notecard set is pretty perfect. I also really love love love her Label + Sticker book too, and a nice price! I know the thumbprint set shows as on backorder, but if you google you can find it for sale on other websites too. Don’t forget to check Sarah’s webshop for her awesome creations as well.

What about Bake It Pretty for a baking-loving friend. I just love the cupcake decorating kit! There is so much other good stuff on the website too, so even if you have a smaller budget you could put together your own box of stuff like a cookie kit–with cookie cutters (she got great ones), sprinkles, etc.

How about some beautiful paper goods from Rifle Paper Co. They are so beautiful that it is hard to choose!

Something from Kitschy Digitals would also be quite nice! The wonderful thing about Danielle’s goodies are they could really cover several people on your shopping list. The digital kits would be great for any scrapbooker, crafter, or you could buy the kits for yourself and then use them to make presents for that camera lover, fruit fan, etc. So good!

And without photos, but just as good as everything above—
-1,000 Places To See Before You Die-this book sounds great to me!
-zines-depending on what zine you buy, these could make excellent presents for most people on your list.
-Ramen Noodle Chocolate Bars-how awesome is that? They also make Tortilla Lime + Salt chocolate, and french toast chocolate as well, yum.

I know this list isn’t very big, but I thought it would still be fun to share!, I am going to try and make another gift guide listing things you can make. I’d love to hear some things you’ve purchased for gifts and are ecited about!

Hey wow, our 2nd ever singles comp is almost out, and we're still a band. We must really love releasing singles!

As you can see from this handy promotional poster, Couple Tracks will feature a whole bunch of songs from 7"'s that exist in various degree's of legitimacy. For instance you'll see exhibit 1c, the "Carried Out to the Sea" 7" - that doesn't really exist, but that song is on this compilation, and we needed to fill space on the poster, so why not. Plus we had this great left-over image of a boat (not really a left-over though, since it's used on the insert to the No Epiphany 7" [I think], a track that is also comped onto this record*)
Likewise, cover 3a, Teenage Problems. This song is included in the compilation, but the songs existence as it's own 7" single release is half-dubious at best. Collectors will note that if you peer into the crevasse created by pushing a 7" sleeve inwards by its edges (in order to extract the vinyl, perhaps) you'll see another image, that of several young boys cavorting in the nude. Carefully dismantling this cover (with sweaty palms and a red face no doubt) either by heating the glue or just ripping it carefully by the edges will reveal a brand new 7" sleeve, the cover of which has been comped on this poster. The song as well.
Covers 2a and 2d are pretty much the same to the casual observer. Again collectors will note that one refers to the North American version of the Dangerous Fumes 7", the other to the European Version. To your dismay, the Basque Region entry will not be included this time.
Now to 5c, the Daytrotter Sessions. There are a few songs on this compilation from our Daytrotter Sessions, recorded about a year ago. Again, you won't find these songs on vinyl inside a sleeve that has a cat and a lamp on the cover, because it just doesn't exist.
Lastly to 5d, what you may have assumed was a lark, but what in truth brings us to why this post is being written in the first place. Yes, the name of this collection is "Couple Tracks". Yes, the artwork features the band in the classic laissez-faire punk posture. Yes, it's the same artwork as the LP/CD versions. But notice the dimensions of this image - it's the same as all the other 7"'s. How else, other than some heavenly intervention, could a CD or an LP be made to appear the same size of a 7"? The very titles of these objects imply the impossibility of this feat - 12", 7" - two drastically different sizes. In fact this image DOES correlate to a CD, an LP and a 7" - all at once. To obtain this miracle 7", just go to the complicated ordering page on the Matador website. For a limited time only, you can buy this 7" through the internet, just by being one of the first several people to try and do so. Once you have, please head back to the comments section of this web-post and log your success by leaving a "pre-ordered" comment. It is really rare.
Just one further note on the poster - the background photo was taken at some train station on our tour on China, which happened last March and was probably the coolest thing we've ever done as a band. Also featured are the patronizing mustaches of Young Gov and Mr. Jo. By patronizing, I mean patronizing their own faces.

IN OTHER NEWS
Do They Know It's Christmas, our cover version was voted single of the week over at The Guardian, because our friend writes the column and there isn't actually any voting. Since we've been monitoring it's progress on iTunes, I can tell you for sure that if it was a vote, single of the week would be some Lady GaGa song, followed closely by like 10 Taylor Swift songs. Anyhow, maybe you could buy our song. It's for charity.

Speaking of voting, our very own Sandy McRanda was voted #2 something or other about dumping you for tour or whatever. You can read all about it HERE for like the next 6 minutes before Sandy tells me to take this link down. No idea where they got the candid photo of Sandy practicing her bass parts in the privacy of her own sun room.

I have a new mgmt company. If you are gay and need management, please contact me through my other blog/business website.

ALSO JONAH GOT ENGAGED. Sorry mustache aficianados. There's still Damian. Oh wait he's married to. Well you can always go like some other band.

*Couple Tracks contains a version of No Epiphany that has yet to be released on vinyl, which would call into question the placement of the No Epiphany 7" sleeve on this poster as well.

momma's jewels

sweatshirt over jammies

big girl shoes!

my daughter’s 15 months old now, nearly 16 months, and growing up fast and furious. of late she’s been completely and totally enamored with clothes and accessories. her own, but also and especially, mine. she’s been wanting to wear my shoes (see her wearing my red clogs, above!), and has even taken to grabbing my shoes (various different pairs) and carrying them around the house with her like a lovey or fetish object. she could have hours of fun just sitting in the closet amongst my pile of shoes, and she’ll often grab a pair and bring them out to me, yearning to try them on. she’s been repeatedly wanting to put on a gold sparkly pair of her mary janes in recent weeks, and has also been grabbing various sweaters and sweatshirts of hers and demanding that they be put on her, sometimes several different ones in rapid succession until she’s satisfied.

it’s no surprise, to pete and i, anyway, that one of her first words was “shoe”.

these behaviors seem adorable, if not a little precocious, no? this being my first (and probably only) child, and also, not knowing much about kids in general beyond my own…help me out, if you know: is this kind of thing normal? other fashionable mommas of girls out there: do your baby girls do this??

at any rate, i think it’s pretty funny and very endearing. i’m wondering if she’ll continue this fascination with clothes and shoes and baubles, or if it’s just a passing toddler or childhood phase, wherein one’s child wants to be “just like mommy” (or daddy, as the case may be)…?

but, taking this further, i also wonder: how much of what we wear, what we love, what we’re into, is influenced by what we see our parents/siblings/family wearing? as i see it, those around us, our families and close associates, have a big influence over us and what we wear. this can and does usually seem to go one of two ways (sometimes both, or one way or the other depending on where you are in your life or development at a given juncture): one, you can dress just like/or similar to mom and/or dad (or like the rest of your family), or you can try and do the exact opposite, as a way to exert independence and set oneself apart from whom you sprang. going with what you know, or (un)consciously going against it.

i know for me, it was like this: it went both ways. i wanted, and still want to be a lot like my parents, i have some similarities in my tastes in relation to them, but have always had a stubborn streak that made me want to be my own person, stylistically, and otherwise.

my dad’s style is very trad, very new-england in the 1960s, very collegiate, very ivy league. and he looks amazing. i definitely see myself embracing similar tastes, a lot of times, leaning back on classics as foundation in my wardrobe, albeit usually wearing them with more than a little cheeky twist (unexpected fabrics, odd yet calculated pairings of pieces, colors, textures, etc.). dad also loves color, just like moi (boy howdy!)…we’re both unafraid to wear it. as for mom, i still have a picture of her in my mind’s eye that includes her sporting a chin-length blonde bob (my hair is usually some variation on the same), and if i could get my hands on some of the things she wore in the 1970s (like that long gone, camel-colored a-line wool jumper she had!) i’d be a happy, happy woman.

but…there are a good many things i love and wear that i doubt my parents would ever consider in a million eons…and that’s what makes me *me*, my tastes mine. and that’s fine. but my parents are, in many ways, the core of me, the jumping off point from which i come, stylistically.

maybe it’s a little like this: you take a little from what you know, mix it with who you are inside, and volia…you have your own personal style statement. or something like that.

i can’t wait to see who my little poppy flower becomes. will she continue to love all the bright colors, like i do? will she still be into the shoes, the jewelry, the clothes? will she love getting dressed up as much as i do? will she clamor to wear my old things when she’s older? or will she eschew it all, in favor of her own different and delightful tastes and whims? maybe she’ll indulge in a little of both, remixing things her own way, playing with influences and trends and all of it. either way, it will be fascinating to watch her grow and watch her evolve, stylistically, and otherwise.

Thanks for all the lovely comments and wishes on my last post. We had a lovely evening in of dinner by candle (and tree) light, coffee and movie (by tree light too!)

Here is some random fabric stuff to show you. These are the swatches I got of the cupcake fabrics…

I also added a bunch of stuff to my Etsy shop–things that are made and can just be shipped out easily. I’m going to try and make a post tomorrow with some of my picks for gift ideas, including some things I bought myself for my gift list.

Without a doubt the absolute best years of my life have been spent with this man.

12 December 2009 @ 05:52 pm

In November I signed the kids and I up for the Crafty Crow’s annual ornament swap. My friend Katie had done it the previous year, and it sounded like such fun. Plus the theme this year was Fairy Tales so how could we resist. Of course we went the route of gnomes + mushrooms (I am predictable like that). We had so much fun making these ornaments, and most of the things were stuff we had on hand. I did a little how-to below, but you could really vary the whole thing by using different colors and different little toys on the ornaments themselves. I think we are even going to pick up some more wooden bases to make some for our friends too.

1. Materials-Things you’ll need to make the ornaments are plain wood circles (you could also cut these bases if you have some thick fallen branches around), pipe cleaners (I bought these red and white ones but you could use two colors and twist them together yourself), some sort of fabrics to cover the wood base (I have a big green velvet ribbon, and red and white polka dot ribbon, but you could use felt) glue gun, and trinkets and toys for top (most of what we used are cake toppers)

2. Trace your wood circles onto the back side of the material you are covering the wood discs with. Cut them out and set aside.

3. Bend one pipe cleaner on each end so it forms the handle. Use the hot glue to glue this down to the wood base. Then cover both sides of the wood base (covering the ends of the handle too) with the circles of fabric that you cut out in step 2.

4. Now you can glue pipe cleaners around the entire edge of your bases, or use ribbon, etc. Then have fun arranging all your trinkets on top, and glue in place!

I hope you won’t mind all the holiday related posts, but with two snows, and all these decorations it is keeping me in the holiday mood non-stop. Last night we went to my youngest son’s Christmas play. He was elf #12 and had his own little lines to memorize, and one elf costume that I had to sew. The play was filled with songs, costumes, and was so cute.

Then last night we had another snow storm (which almost all of has been washed away by the sporadic rain today) I’m loving all the winter weather, I was afraid we wouldn’t see snow until after Christmas, and we’ve had it twice!

We have also been doing an advent calendar this year and that has been lots of fun. We normally do the chocolate ones or Playmobil etc. This year I took a cue from my friend Katie and made an advent calendar filled with activities instead. I had this cute Martha Stewart paper house that I got last year on clearance. So I sat down and made rhymes (like Katie) for each day. Some of the activities include making a thermos of cocoa for a walk in the woods, cutting out snowflakes to hang, a library trip specifically for Christmas books, and making ornaments for a swap we are involved in. There are easier ones for busy nights like wrapping gifts together, or listening to Christmas records, etc. My 14 yr. old did roll his eyes a bit the first few times, but now he seems to look forward to the stuff as much as his younger brother. I look forward to them myself, and the great thing about the house is if something comes up the slips of paper can easily be switched around last minute.

We are going to go get our Christmas tree tomorrow, and then I’ll take some photos of the house all decorated!
